Don't Starve
Don't Starve
The quirky music, the creepy characters, and the almost cute
enemies. Don't Starve is a survival game bordering on the horror game line. It
has Lovecraftian elements, and it will have you yelling the strangest things at
the television. While it doesn't really have a set plotline, it does have a bit
of backstory, which is what the below video is! Watch it before you continue
reaching this!

Klei Entertainment's two-dimensional game is filled with
magic, science, and survival. In the original game, you play as a gentleman
scientist named Wilson. Wilson gets trapped by a demon and sent into a world
filled with creatures and even plants that want to kill him. It's your job to
survive and fight for him to help him make it through the world he was thrust
into. When you first wake up in this strange world, the demon Maxwell tells you
that you better find something to eat before the night falls.
The thing that he doesn’t tell you is that finding food is
the least of your worries. You start off with absolutely nothing as Wilson. And
you need to make materials, tools and even weapons to protect yourself.
Everything you find and collect can either hinder or help you, you just need to
be careful of what you pick up. As a long time player, one of the first things
that I suggest you find is a piece of flint and a stick. You need these to make
an axe so you can chop down wood.
Remember how finding food is the least of your worries? When
night falls, demons come out to play and the only thing that will keep them
away is fire. You need to find the proper ingredients to make a fire and to
protect yourself at night. Be sure to keep an eye on your sanity, health, and
hunger metres. If all three of them get too low, they can kill you.
One of the best ways to keep your sanity up and high is to
make a flower crown as soon as you as you can. Picking flowers helps your
sanity, and not only do you look completely adorable but they come in handy as
the nights get longer and the days get shorter. Sanity drains at night, and in
the winter time. Though when you hit winter a flower crown won’t help much.
Flowers are scarce during the winter days and you’ll need to get creative to
find other ways to keep that sanity up! Be careful, if it gets too low the
shadow monsters will attack. And there’s nothing you can do when they start
attacking.
Creatures and plants will either help you or will try to
kill you. Tree Guards and Poison Birchnut Trees are bad, and that’s putting
that lightly. Tree Guards come to life when you cut down too many trees without
planting new ones, the same way that the Poison trees come to life when you cut
down too many of those trees and only take the nuts. Spiders will attack you,
hounds will come to attack you every ten days, and let’s not get started on the
very territorial tall birds that chase you and try to kill you if you get too
close.
There are creatures that will help you too, though. Chester
is a bouncy little creature that can act as a chest that comes with you
everywhere you go! A creature called a Glomer is one that can help keep your
sanity up and high. Beefalo sit somewhere in between. They are buffalo type
creatures that give you wool to make hats for the winter and they kill hounds
if you can’t kill them yourself. During mating season though, they can be
dangerous and will charge at you if you look at them or get in their way.
Various Enemies, unknown.
One of my favourite things about this game is the multiplayer element and the fact that as you progress through the game, you unlock more character than just Wilson. There’s a pyromaniac type girl named Willow. There’s a strongman named Wolfgang. There’s a depressed and dark girl named Wendy, and she’s my favourite to play, I’ll talk about her more below. There’s a librarian named Wickerbottom, how cool is that? Another favourite character of mine is Webber, who’s a spider-man cross character. We don’t know much about him, but he can control spiders which is a good ability to have.
Wendy is a depressed and dark girl, as stated above. Wendy
is one of the few characters that gives you a way to get a bit of help if you
get caught in a fight and you need someone on your side. She has a flower, and
once it blooms and you drop it, the ghost of her twin sister appears to help.
Wendy’s sanity isn’t affected by having her sister’s ghost around, but bringing
Abigail to “life” is a major sanity hit.
Don’t Starve is an incredibly fun game, and it’s one that I
think everyone should play. It’s fairly age appropriate, as the images and
graphics aren’t too scary and there’s no blood or bad words. The characters’
voices are little melodies, like a flute or a tuba. It’s a fun game, it’s a
strategy game, but most of all it’s incredibly Lovecraftian, and it’s just the
right amount of creepy to keep you on your toes!
And remember, everything's not as it seems...
